Pawson House, Arthur Road, Wimbledon
There different structural materials define the three areas of this house; sleeping, stairway, and living. The house has a concrete substructure with a timber framed and clad bedroom tower, and a steel framed rear section forming the upper living areas, clad in engineering brick. These simple interlocked volumes reflect the internal planning and programme of the building. The interior deliberately plays with the perception of space, compressing and then opening out in an unexpected direction to create a sequence of changing and ambiguous volumes. The house is unashamedly modern, with an honest use of materials and plain detailing.
