Apartment Block, Balham Grove,
Balham, London
Currently nearing completion, this project comprises 52 flats over a large underground car park. On this scheme we researched a number of alternative construction systems ranging from timber frame, through to load bearing masonry, finally deciding on an in-situ flat slab as the preferred solution. The project was split into two phases, structure and architecture, so as to improve overall construction times and cost. This required some careful detailing of structure in advance of the normal design and construction process. Such innovations were ‘knock out’ slab areas to form service risers of unknown exact dimensions, and cast pockets to provide anchorage to balcony retaining bolts. Also additional bars were cast into floor slabs to allow diamond drilling of steel roof frame anchor bolts in exact locations, unknown at the time of casting.
