New Gallery Space for the New Art Centre,
Roche Court, Wiltshire
The New Art Centre was originally established as a London art gallery in 1958 by Madeleine Bessborough. In 1993 she moved the Centre to Roche Court in Wiltshire, and over the past seven years has created a sculpture park in the estate around the main house. The latest addition to the park is a new gallery for paintings and smaller sculpture, designed by Munkenbeck and Marshall. The new building connects the main house to a small orangery, and is built along the line of the original kitchen garden wall. The pavilion roof is intended to float over the long gallery space, the roof structure being supported by the original rear wall and structural columns concealed within the two oak doors of the glass façade. The roof is a traditional plywood and joist structure, supported on zig zag profile steel beams, and the whole clad in aluminium.
